Scope

  1. Participants are required to develop a mobile application using open source technology. The mobile application shall run on either iOS or Android only.
  2. The deployment of any of the above components must not have dependencies on any commercial products.
  3. Any other open source technology can be used, where applicable.
  4. Participants must make use of software (either readymade or created by the participant), to produce a workable solution. The usage of open source software should be clearly stated in the documentation.
  5. Any APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) used must be non-proprietary and not belong to any commercial product.

Implementation Timeframe

All participants will be given approximately 5 months (June 2015 – 31 October 2015) to implement (analysis, design, development and deployment) their solutions.

  2. Format of Project Summary
    All participants must adhere to the following format for submission.

    • Participant details, which must include:
      • Full Name
      • I.C. Number
      • Postal address
      • Email address
      • Contact number
      • Institution Name
    • Name of the software
    • Name of Tools Used and Version of OS Supported
    • Description of the system, and its value to the intended audience (200 words max)
    • Functionalities and features, and their innovativeness and uniqueness (200 words max)
    • References/Notes

Evaluation & Results

  1. Evaluation of the submitted proposals will take approximately 2 weeks from the closing date.
  2. All submissions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
    • Essential Value
    • Innovation and Uniqueness
    • User Friendliness
    • System Stability
  3. Project Demonstration/ Presentation
    • If necessary, participants might be called to present their projects to the evaluation panel at SAINS' Kuching office.
  4. All participating entries shall be presented with a Certificate of Participation.

Rules & Regulations

  1. The competition is open to all students from Institutions of Higher Learning in Sarawak, except for those who are employees of SAINS group of companies. The student must be a registered FULL TIME student with the institution.
  2. Participants may send in more than one proposal, but only one entry will be eligible for prize consideration in the competition.
  3. Any software that has previously placed in any other competition is not eligible for entry in this Competition. An entry will have been deemed entered upon the receipt of the project. The Organizer does not accept any responsibility for late or lost entries due to the Internet or Postal Service. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.
  4. The organizer will not pass any participant's personal details on to any other organization without permission, except for the purposes of running the competition which the participant has entered into.
  5. The Organizer’s decision is final in all situations including any not covered in the rules and regulations and no correspondence will be entered into.
  6. The Organizer reserves the right to cancel the competition at any stage, if deemed necessary, and if circumstances arise outside of their control.
  7. All references, especially relating to open source products must be clearly specified within the documentation.
  8. Any licenses adopted must adhere to at least one license recognized by the Open Software Initiative listed at www.opensource.org/licenses/index.php.
  9. Participants must not submit any unlawful, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, racially offensive or otherwise objectionable pieces of work, or any work which infringes upon a third person's copyright.
  10. Winners will be contacted personally by e-mail.
  11. The Organizer reserves the right to select, edit and arrange the submitted projects, and to remove them from the website at any time at its sole discretion.
  12. All expenses incurred within the implementation cycle of the competition shall be borne by the participant. Participants will be deemed to have accepted these rules and to have agreed to be bound by them at the time of entry into this competition.
  13. Teams may consist of one or more participants.
